Sweater Mending & Care Workshop

In this workshop, join Lisa Hutchinson of Top Stitch Mending, as you learn about a variety of clothing care tips and tools to use when it comes to maintaining your favorite knitwear. As you sew together, Lisa will guide you on how to address moth damage and other types of holes in knits. Participants will learn five basic hand-mending repair techniques to fix sweaters, leggings and T-shirt damage, plus how to address snags in your favorite knit pieces.
Participants will also benefit from additional time after the class for repair consultations with Lisa until 3:30PM.
No knits or experience necessary to participate. We will have plenty of materials for you to practice on!
IMPORTANT: If you do have items you'd like to practice on, please bring them. Place items with moth holes in a ziplock and freeze for a minimum of 72 hours before class.
About the Instructor:
From Lisa Hutchinson: "My sewing story began at the age of 11, when my Bomba (that’s my mom) taught me to use a sewing machine so that I could make the wildest, widest, wide-leg pants of my dreams. They were orange with blue flowers and they changed my life forever." Her journey, woven over the next fourteen years and through eight different cities, landed her in Richmond, VA, where she has honed her craft mending, teaching, and making fiber art. "RVA is my home and it’s where I teach, mend, and make fiber art in a low-waste sewing studio called Top Stitch. As a fierce friend of the environment, my priority has always been nature and community and the beautiful moments where the two entwine. I believe we can take care of our material things and each other at the same time. It’s my mission to nurture both, every stitch of the way!"
